Nantong Textile Vocational Technology College (NTVTC) boasts a long history and a rich cultural background. In 1912, Zhang Jian, a well-known patriotic industrialist and educator, established the Nantong Textile Training School, renamed as the Nantong Private Textile Specialized School the following year.

As the country’s first private textile training school, NTVTC has gone through many changes since then. It was once integrated into Nantong University, functioning as one of its specialized academic departments. Later, it became the Textile Section of the Nantong Institute and was moved to Shanghai in a merger to form the East China Textile Engineering Institute in 1952. This institution developed into the China Textile University in 1985 and is known as Donghua University at present.

In 1957, on the original site of the Textile Section of the Nantong Institute, several local textile enterprises originally established by Zhang Jian, set up the Nantong Textile Enterprises Sponsored Textile Industry Academy, renamed as the Nantong Textile Industry Academy in 1959. The academy closed, reopened and changed its name before it finally became known as the Jiangsu Nantong Academy of Textile Industry in 1979. In August 1999 it was upgraded into the Nantong Textile Vocational Technology College by the national Ministry of Education.

NTVTC is a full time public college under the jurisdiction of the Department of Education of Jiangsu Province. In the past few years due to its many achievements, the college has received awards at all levels. These include such ministerial level certifications as Advanced College in Vocational Education and Advanced College in Textile Education. It has also been recognized by the Jiangsu provincial government as an Advanced College in Vocational Education, an Advanced College in Employment Consultation and an Advanced College in Moral Education.

The college attaches great importance to its connections with industry and manufacturing. It has helped to set up Jiangsu Textile Fashion Vocational Education Groups and serves as a managing director for these units. NTVTC is currently a vice president of the China National Textile Fashion Education Association, a member of the Standing Committee of China Higher Vocational Education and Research Association, etc. The college enjoys a high status and a good reputation among textile academies in the nation and among higher vocational colleges and schools in Jiangsu province. Such media as the Peoples Daily, China Education, China Vocational Technology Education and China Educational TV Station have presented highly complimentary reports of its achievements.

NTVTC is located on Qingnian Road (East), Nantong. With its spacious layout, elegant settings and modern buildings, it has been awarded a Civic Virtues College and Gardenlike College by the Jiangsu provincial government.

The college has more than 9,000 faculty members and students. The programs and ongoing research at NTVTC include such specialties as Textiles and Dying, Machinery and Electronics, Information Technology, Fashion Design, Applied Foreign Languages and a subordinated college in cooperation with an Australian college, altogether covering 7 disciplines, 28 majors and 22 double majors.

The success of NTVTC is based on the high standard of its faculty. 31.5% of them are professors and associate professors and 71.2% of them own certificates in specialized fields. As well, the college employs prominent experts from the China Engineering Institute and other well-known institutes in the country as part-time professors.

To facilitate teaching and research, the college has worked hard to find financial resources to update its laboratories and teaching facilities. NTVTC has more than 1,800 computers, 48 modern laboratories and workshops, and 5 science and research centers. The modern library now has a collection of more than 355,000 volumes and periodicals in various disciplines.

NTVTC attaches great importance to the demands of the job market and closely combines industry participation, teaching and research. It has established stable relationship with many enterprises, providing off-campus bases for student fieldwork.

In the past few years, teachers and students of the college have won many prizes in a series of competitions. Due to their advanced practical studies, 100% of the graduates of NTVTC have found relevant employment immediately upon graduation over the last three years. This remarkable achievement has won the college the title of Advanced College in Employment Consultation by the Jiangsu provincial government for 4 years in succession.

The national Ministry of Education and the Jiangsu provincial government have selected NTVTC as a trial school for reform in higher vocational education. The college is making great efforts to develop and update specialties and courses at the ministerial and provincial levels. As one of the first 3 trial schools in the nation, the college has successfully passed the assessment of education by Ministry of Education in 2006.

NTVTC has developed its 11th five-year plan and is well on the way to continued reputation and prosperity in the future.
